Adjustable optical zoom is an important feature, as it helps avoid the degraded image resolution of traditional thermal monoculars. Without adjustable optical zoom, users have to rely on digital zoom, which decreases the sensor resolution. For example, 1 step of digital zoom on a 640x480 sensor decreases the thermal image resolution to 320x240, and another step of digital zoom reduces the resolution to an unsatisfactory 160x120. The ZOOM ZH35 offers a solution - with an adjustable field of view. By rotating the focus ring, users can zoom out for a 1.5X 640x512 resolution image, or zoom in for a 3X 640x512 resolution image.

InfiRay Outdoor discovered the common issue of image degradation caused by fixed field of view limitation in thermal monoculars with digital zoom and the requirement of two devices for dual fields of view in full resolution.
